What is Cotton Packing?
Cotton packing is a self-care method where a small amount of cotton is inserted between the ingrown nail edge and the skin. This prevents the nail from digging into the flesh, providing immediate pain relief.
When done correctly, it can help create a path for the nail to grow out normally.
Steps for Cotton Packing
- Clean Your Feet and Nails: It is best to do this after a bath when the nails are soft. Thoroughly wash and disinfect the area first.
- Prepare the Cotton: Take a small piece of sterile cotton and roll it into a tiny ball about the size of a grain of rice.
- Insert into the Gap: Using tweezers, gently push the cotton ball underneath the corner of the nail that is digging into the skin.
- Secure (Optional): You can apply a small piece of medical tape over it to keep the cotton from falling out.
⚠️ Critical Safety Precautions
- Do Not Force It: If it causes sharp pain, stop immediately. Forcing cotton into an inflamed area can cause further damage or infection.
- Watch the Size: If the cotton ball is too large, it may increase pressure. Aim for just enough to lift the nail edge by 0.5mm to 1mm.
- Change Daily: Cotton traps moisture and can harbor bacteria. You must replace it with a fresh piece every single day.
- Stop if Infected: If you see blood, pus, or severe swelling, do not attempt this. Please consult a dermatologist right away.
