Is Your Footwear the Problem? 3 Conditions for Choosing Safe Shoes
Wrong Shoes Render Any Care Meaningless
Most causes of ingrown toenails stem from external pressure (shoes). Even during correction treatment, wearing ill-fitting shoes significantly increases the risk of recurrence.
3 Absolute Conditions for Toenail-Friendly Shoes
1. Sufficient 'Toe Room' (Length)
Your toes should not touch the front of the shoe. Ideally, there should be about 1cm of space (wiggle room). Ensure the toe box shape matches your foot type.
2. Firm Heel Counter
If your foot slides forward in the shoe, your toes will hit the front with every step. To prevent this, choose shoes with stiff heel support and use laces or straps to secure the midfoot.
3. Flexible at the Ball of the Foot
Shoes with soles that are too stiff to bend while walking are a no-go. Moving your toes naturally while stepping applies healthy pressure to the nail. Walking shoes with moderate flexibility are highly recommended.
If You Must Wear Pumps or Safety Boots
When work requires specific footwear:
- Use Insoles: Arch-supporting insoles can prevent the foot from collapsing forward and reduce pressure on the toes.
- Take Breaks: Take your shoes off whenever possible during breaks to let your feet breathe and restore circulation.
